The Zartman House at Sidwell Friends School is an historic structure listed in the National Register of Historic Places, as well as on the DC Inventory of Historic Sites. For the last twenty years, the Zartman House has served as the administration building.

Our work included a preliminary building evaluation and programming study. This was followed by a full building renovation that included new mechanical systems (utilizing geothermal wells for heating and cooling). The first, second and attic levels were renovated in the style of the existing house. The basement (formerly a service space) was fully remodeled into private offices by incorporating glass and natural wood finish partitions to maximize the available daylight. The lower portion of the existing rear terrace was also enclosed with glass walls to create two offices and a conference room.

The awkward circulation of the narrow corridors and steep staircases of the original structure were simplified to a more functional layout that is easier to navigate and has improved communication between offices. All historic moldings and trim profiles were matched, and the high ceilings, wood floors in the circulation areas, paneled doors, and working fireplaces preserved. The project revitalized the historic building and created much needed space for the school without compromising the integrity of the building.
