Project Description

An existing contemporary carport and a screened porch addition were removed from a mid-nineteenth century farmhouse—a DC Historic Landmark building—and replaced with a two-story addition for the creation of more desirable spaces on a very limited site overlooking the Potomac River valley.

The addition is compatible in style and scale with the existing structure and connects to the house at the ground floor by a covered walkway and, at the second floor, by a continuous open-air wood patio.

The addition also contains a garage on the lower level and a single large open room on the upper level offering views up and down the river. Extensive alterations and renovations were made to the existing house including the bathrooms and kitchen.

A new entry porch was created on the driveway side of the house, and a new porch was added to the front of the original house. The result is a well-laid out addition that connects the existing home and interior spaces to the extensive surrounding landscape and the new swimming pool.
