Art Moderne House

Project Description

This project consists of a third floor addition to an existing two-story, urban Moderne style house notable for its restraint and severity. The house was built in 1940 in the Georgetown Historic District of Washington, DC. A conservatory was added at the rear, enclosing an existing terrace overlooking the garden and swimming pool.

The addition reinforces the classical proportions of the house. The sole decorative motif on the original house, the Greek key frieze, was complemented by a simple triglyph motif in the addition.

The new interior elements such as the kitchen and the stair leading from the second to the third floor were designed according to a more contemporary aesthetic to complement the owners’ collection of modern art.
